UPDATE #10: Youth for Animals (YFA) had sent a letter to the Delhi Zoo on October 4, 2021 requesting Shankar's release to a sanctuary due to his ongoing miserable and solitary condition. Given that we have received no response from the zoo, on November 16, 2021, YFA has sent a representation to the Hon'ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi with a copy to-
- Sh. Bhupinder Yadav, Hon’ble. Minister of Environment and Forests & the Chairman of CZA.
- Mr. Ashwini Kumar Choubey, Ld. Ministry of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change
- Dr. O.P. Chaudhary, Chairman, Animal Welfare Board of India [animalwelfareboard@gmail.com]

We sincerely hope that the Hon'ble Prime Minister takes note of Shankar's condition and the relevant authorities can work towards not only making Shankar's life better but also take action with regard to the broader issue of elephant captivity in India.
After all, we must pay heed to Mahatma Gandhi's words, “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”
