FREE THE OCKLAWAHA RIVER BY THE BREACHING OF RODMAN DAM
11 авг. 2019 г.

The location of the drawdown public meeting/workshop on Tuesday September 17th is at Ravine Gardens State Park from 6-8pm. That information was not included in the announcement but was gathered from direct email communication with Greenway Manager, Mickey Thomason.

I could not find this "Lake Ocklawaha Management Plan 1979-1983" online. There are no digital copies available. However, I was able to find a hardcopy in the bowels of the Marston Science Library. It seems contradictory to say that drawdowns provide "general improvement of the ecological health of the system" only to draw up again a few months later effectively undoing those improvements. I found other contradictions by comparing the major benefits that Mickey mentions to the executive summary of the Lake Ocklawaha Management Plan 1979-83. Here are some of the general results listed in the Executive Summary of the study:

  • No measurable increase in bass reproduction
  • No measurable decrease in chemical control of aquatic plants
  • No change (probably) in food supply to fishes

Why not follow the 2012 Management and Restoration of the Fish Populations of Silver Springs and the Middle and Lower Ocklawaha River, Florida, USA which concludes that "nursery habitat for largemouth bass should increase below the breached dam once normal flows are restored"?

Let's go ask!
