You recently signed a petition on behalf of Teodora Vasquez, a Salvadoran woman who was jailed in 2008 after suffering a miscarriage but which the state claimed was homicide under its draconian anti-abortion laws. Unfortunately, despite compelling testimony offered by obstetric specialists, the court reviewing Teodora's case rejected her appeal this past Wed 12/13.
We are disappointed, as are her family and lawyers, but thank you for having paid attention to this case. For those of you who aren't aware, El Salvador is one of 6 countries in the world (El Salvador, Malta, the Vatican, Chile, the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua) where abortion is illegal under all circumstances, including those of rape, incest or even when the life of the mother is in danger.
If women's rights are an issue of concern to you, as a question of international solidarity we encourage you to stay informed and involved. Civil society organizations such as ours, Amnesty International Group 11 in New York City, work on these and many other human rights issues and are a good way to participate.
