On June 3rd in the Left Forum in New York City, supporters of progressive voices in India hosted a presentation and discussion about the arrest and life-sentence of Delhi University Professor GN Saibaba, as well as four other activists, for allegedly “waging war” against the Indian state and being a member of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist). The only evidence of these charges came from the testimony of intelligence officers and police agents.
At his trial, Professor Saibaba demonstrated that his “crime” was to criticize and organize legal movements against the Indian state. As a leading member of the Revolutionary Democratic Front, Saibaba has consistently advocated for the rights of landless and poor peasants, adivasi (indigenous) peoples, dalits (formerly called untouchables), workers, women, Muslims and progressive students and intellectuals.
Saibaba has launched essential criticism against the corporate pillage of adivasi water, forest and land resources by profit-hungry mining and industrial corporations. He has also relentlessly exposed the deployment of more than 100,000 paramilitary forces by the central government in adivasi areas in eastern and central India under the name of Operation Green Hunt.
The attempt to silence Professor Saibaba’s voice is reflective of the growing attempt of the state to squash all progressive forces in India.
Panelists explored the ramifications of this attack on Saibaba and the RDF, and progressive responses that have already developed in India and internationally.
This video includes audio from the presentation at the panel given by Abraham Moritz, a Boston-based political activist and scholar.
