Rumeysa Ozturk, the Tufts University doctoral student whose unjust detention galvanized thousands, has been released from ICE custody after over six weeks of confinement. This incredible victory is a testament to the power of collective action.

Rumeysa's ordeal began when masked federal agents arrested her near her home in Somerville, Massachusetts, following her co-authorship of an op-ed critical of Tufts University's response to the Gaza conflict. She was subsequently held in a Louisiana detention center, facing deteriorating health conditions and mounting legal challenges.

On May 9, U.S. District Judge William K. Sessions III ordered her immediate release, citing violations of her First Amendment and due process rights. The judge emphasized that her detention was based solely on protected speech, setting a significant precedent for the rights of international students and activists.

Rumeysa has since returned to Massachusetts, where she is eager to resume her studies and continue her advocacy. Her case remains ongoing, but this victory marks a crucial step toward justice.

Thank you for standing with Rumeysa and championing the principles of free speech and due process. Let's continue to support her as she navigates the path ahead.
