Release Sierra Leonean journalist David Tam Bayoh from prison

The Issue

Africans must be be free to express their views. It is high time that as Sierra Leoneans we begin to speak truth, confront injustice and corruption and reclaim our country.  It is alleged that journalist Tam Bayoh's arrest order was signed by President Koroma himself and will remain in force, until ‘it pleases His Excellency’.

Although no official reason has been given for his arrest, it is rumoured that his Monologue programme last Saturday in which he drew a parallel between the fleeing President Campaore and President Koroma may have angered the President. We know that several African Presidents are toying with the idea of constitutional change or refusal to step down from office. If President Koroma was not planning this, why would Monologue's claim incite such heavyhandedness? The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists has in no uncertain terms condemned the arrest of the journalist by armed police.

Given his Government's dire handling of Ebola, that has exposed all that is wrong with Sierra Leone, President Koroma ought to take heed and proceed very cautiously.
