This week we were shocked and saddened to learn that Lindsay and Craig had both been given a ten year sentence in Iran. A ten-year espionage sentence places this case in line with the most severe politically motivated detentions of UK nationals in Iran.
The sentence follows a court appearance on 27 October 2025 before Judge Abolghasem Salavati at Branch 15 of the Islamic Revolutionary Court in Tehran. The hearing lasted approximately three hours. Lindsay and Craig were not permitted to present a defence. No evidence was disclosed to Lindsay and Craig and the sentence is arbitrary and baseless. Judge Salavati has previously been sanctioned by the UK, US and EU in connection with human rights violations and the conduct of trials criticised internationally as “show trials”.
Lindsay and Craig remain in horrific, terrifying conditions and have decided to speak out for themselves; they both took part in pre-recorded interviews with ITV News. Lindsay also talked to BBC Radio 4 Today programme about the letter she had sent to the Iranian authorities earlier this week, setting out why their treatment was against Iranian law.
We were pleased to see a shift in the UK government response with Yvette Cooper making a statement that their sentence was "completely appalling and totally unjustifiable". Our concern now is to ensure that the UK Government follow through on their promises, don’t let this drift and make sure that follow up is swift.
