I'm STILL Knocking!

There are seasons when life seems to demand everything from you at once.
Over the past several weeks, I have been navigating my own challenges—preparing for major surgery, moving after more than two years of repeated flooding in my apartment, and trying to put pieces of my life back together.
But there is one thing that has never moved from the center of my heart: My son is still incarcerated.
Byron has now spent more than 20 years behind the wall. Twenty years of birthdays. Twenty years of holidays. Twenty years of watching his children grow from a distance. Twenty years in a system where, despite maintaining an extraordinary institutional record, completing programs, mentoring others, teaching other incarcerated men, and demonstrating again and again who he is today, he remains confined by decisions rooted in who the system says he was nearly two decades ago.
And so, even while life is happening to me, I continue fighting for him.
There have been setbacks. There have been doors that appeared to open only to close because of technicalities. There have been decisions that have left us frustrated, including a recent program-transfer denial that incorrectly referenced “Attempted Murder”—a crime for which Byron was not charged nor convicted.
But hear me clearly: We are not giving up.
I continue to pursue every legitimate avenue available for review, accountability, relief, and ultimately Byron’s freedom. I continue speaking with advocates, elected officials, correctional leadership, and others who have the ability to examine what justice should look like after nearly two decades.
And I continue asking you to stand with us.
If you have already signed Byron’s petition, thank you. Every signature represents another person saying that his life is worthy of review. If you have not signed yet, I am asking you to please add your name—and then share the petition with someone else.
This journey has taught me that justice rarely arrives simply because it is deserved. Sometimes justice must be pursued. Sometimes justice must be demanded. And sometimes a mother has to keep knocking until somebody finally opens the door.
I am still knocking.
And until Byron walks through that door and comes home—I will keep knocking.
