I've been a student at SUNY Fredonia for four years. It has proven itself to be a very liberal college, but like any place it has its shortcomings. We can't change the world in one day, but we can make efforts to make people safe, and sometimes it's something as easy as a bathroom. In almost every building there is an accessible gender neutral bathroom. There's one issue, though, these bathrooms only have one stall. People specifically with marginalized genders (transgender, non binary, genderqueer, etc.) have been ostracized from being able to use the men's and women's bathrooms.
If you grew up in a household where you may have had siblings that identify a different gender identity from you, the likelihood of you sharing a bathroom at home was very high. Here at SUNY Fredonia we are growing into a widely diverse campus, so we must be able to accommodate those who fall into categories we hadn't previously accommodated. We must understand that it isn't unusual to have students who need these things, and that we need to make the effort to help them. Having multiple stalls in a gender neutral restroom, while it seems like it won't be that big of a deal, creates solidarity for a community that has been continuously isolated. This petition is to create this change, and hopefully make something happen that needs to be happening on and off campuses. Please consider signing this petition to help create this change.
