Frankston City Council -Don't exclude Bayside Gymnastics from the Centenary Park Project

We are a small, but proud not-for-profit Gymnastics Club based in Langwarrin. We have amazing gymnasts, coaches and incredibly supportive parents, however, our current location means we cannot grow as a club. We are based at Langwarrin Park Primary School and every afternoon our dedicated coaches set up the entire gym full of our equipment. Every evening, our gymnasts finish 20 minutes early to help pack up the club. Our training hours are limited due to our facilities.
Last October at our AGM, Frankston City Council very proudly announced that Bayside Gymnastics Club would be moving to a new purpose build complex at Centenary Park in 2019. Our members were ecstatic. We could finally move forward as a club and we all excitedly voted for our local councillors in the November elections. We thanked Frankston City Council profusely on our Facebook page as the architect drawings provided by the council were the beginning of our longtime dream being realised.
It turns out that after an election, you no longer need to gather votes so you can change your mind and disappoint hundreds of families. Recent events indicate that Bayside Gymnastics Club is being excluded from the Centenary Park discussions. Despite the promises and the hundreds of hours of work, meeting council requirements it appears that we are no longer being considered for the complex. Where is the transparency? Where is the discussion? The many, many, many messages left with the council have been ignored, this is incredibly unprofessional and lacking integrity.
It is just Bayside Gymnastics that is going to miss out on this complex? We have predominantly female gymnasts. Where is the support for girls participation in sport? Both our boys and girls programs cannot grow without the support of Frankston City Council. By not allowing Bayside Gymnastics Club to be part of this complex the community will miss out on the following:
- Schools program
- Home school participation
- Move My Way - Older person exercise program
- Programs for disaffected youth
- A Sports Academy program
- Increased girls participation in sport
- Increased boys participation in sport
- Local jobs
Frankston City Council, please reassess your decision in regards to our involvement the Centenary Park project. Show some integrity and follow through with what you have promised. Show some leadership and support our local gymnasts. Show some honesty and be transparent about any conflicts of interest that may have occurred. Show some social responsibility and support a local sporting club. Most importantly show that you are to be trusted and taken at your word and not just to gain votes in an election.
