As a European Kurd, and in fulfillment of my moral responsibility, I speak out about what the Kurdish people in Rojava (Northern Syria) are facing.

The Kurdish forces have played a crucial role in defeating ISIS and preventing its expansion toward Europe, paying a heavy human cost in defense of shared security and values. Today, these forces and their people face military attacks, political isolation, and a real risk of renewed instability, which could open the door for ISIS to return.

France, under the leadership of President Emmanuel Macron, has played an active and influential role in the Syrian file and in the war against ISIS. French leadership at this critical moment is not only required but expected now.

We call on President Emmanuel Macron and the French government to take the lead and guide a clear European policy to protect the Kurds, including providing international protection to safeguard Kurdish civilians and their territories in Northern and Eastern Syria from any military attack.

France must take a clear and effective stance to prevent any attacks targeting the Kurdish forces that played a decisive role in defeating ISIS, emphasizing that any attack on them constitutes a direct threat to regional stability and European security.

We also call on the European Union to follow French leadership and adopt a unified European decision—similar in purpose to the U.S. “Save the Kurds” initiative—to ensure long-term protection and official political support for Europe’s Kurdish allies. Weakening the Kurdish forces opens the door for ISIS to return and undermines Europe’s credibility as a reliable ally. Abandonment today means insecurity tomorrow.
