Break the stigma

My name is Joshua Lamb and I am a proud person living in long-term addiction recovery.
Recovery has given me a lot, including the opportunity to be close to finishing a Associate of Applied Science in Human Services, work as the
director of a local advocacy company BreakTheCycle, and most recently, become involved with the
recovery advocacy movement through an exciting organization called Facing Addiction.
Facing Addiction is a national non-profit organization dedicated to finding solutions to the addiction crisis by unifying the
voice of the over 45 million Americans and their families directly impacted by addiction.
In this time of expanded access to healthcare, far too many Americans with addiction issues continue to struggle on the
fringes, without access to the lifesaving programs they deserve.
We wouldn’t treat our grandmothers who have cancer this way. We’d be outraged, on the steps of Congress and our
local hospitals, demanding change - now. Why then has it been acceptable to treat our family and friends who struggle
with the disease of addiction that way?
One word: stigma.
Despite the fact that every leading health authority in the U.S. has been saying addiction is a disease for decades, the
stigma around our health condition is persistent, and continues to have a chilling effect on the progress of addiction
science and public policy.
That’s why the movement Facing Addiction has launched, bringing the millions of people impacted by addiction together
to advocate for more effective policies and programs, has never been more important.
In the immortal words of an American icon, the times, they are a-changin’. And, not a moment too soon
