Come Clean About Clean Energy! Remove Misleading Advertisements Claiming That Natural Gas Fracking Is Helping to Reduce The Effects Of Climate Change

The Issue

Why are we calling on the fossil fuel industry to pull its misleading ad campaign? Read the full story here http://www.addictinginfo.org/2014/01/18/natural-gas-dirty/

A new study released by BP reveals that, in spite of what we've been told about the positive benefits of natural gas, transitioning from traditional fossil fuels to natural gas has done nothing to reduce green gas emissions. Additionally, BP reports that emissions are predicted to continue rising, increasing by more than a third over the next two decades. This rise is expected to continue, in spite of a model that uses natural gas to replace other fossil fuels, such as coal and oil.

The shale gas fracking boom that was ushered in under former Vice President and Halliburton CEO Dick Cheney, is not what it was hyped up to be. This has been a well known fact in places like Ohio, Wyoming and Pennsylvania, where the fracking industry has poisoned water supplies and devastated property values. Still the natural gas industry has pressed ahead with a propaganda campaign touting natural gas obtained by vertical hydrualic fracturing (fracking) as the best thing since sliced bread.

Fracking has had a negative effect on people and the environment, all across the US. But the fossil fuel industry has used it's deceptive advertising campaign to convince the public that fracked gas is cleaner, safer and better for the environment. As part of that propaganda campaign, the fossil fuel industry has also promoted natural gas as a way to reduce carbon emmissions and help minimize the effects of global warming.

But now Christof Ruehl, BP's chief economist, has admitted that the evidence shows switching to natural gas had “little impact on overall emissions.”

Still, the natural gas industry has yet to admit the whole truth or accept any of the blame for the role that fracking plays in increasing greenhouse gasses. Talk to any resident who lives near a fracking site about the industry's burn off practices.

Now that BP has finally admitted what many people already knew, that switching to natural gas will not reduce carbon emissions or help prevent climate change, Michigan activist and 2014 Senate candidate Chris Wahmhoff is calling on the fossil fuel industry to remove advertising that promotes natural gas as 'better for the environment.'

US truth in advertising laws prevent a business from making statements in advertising that are false. Now that BP has openly admitted that switching to natural gas will do nothing to reduce the devastating effects of climate change, Wahmhoff says that he intends to call on the FTC to investigate whether BP and other natural gas companies should be legally allowed to continue making such claims, under federal law.
