Petition updateSave Fort Lauderdale: Fix our Infrastructure and Protect our WatersFinal Petition Update: Thank You for Helping Save Fort Lauderdale

Everyone:

After two months of sewage breaks, the tally is in - Fort Lauderdale has spilled 211M gallons of sewage into its waterways.  The statistics are breathtaking:

* Equivalent to 320 Olympic-sized swimming pools;
* Enough to cover Fort Lauderdale's 165 miles of waterways a full 7-inch deep in waste;
* Larger in volume than BP's Deepwater Horizon, which befouled 57,000 square miles of the Gulf of Mexico.

Your help with this petition mattered.  The over 13,500 signatures gathered helped galvanize our community and raise awareness of our challenges at both the state and national level, including coverage on NBC, ABC, CNN and more.

Unfortunately, our city's elected leaders are steadfast in their opposition to a moratorium.  Our city leaders continue to oppose even having a public discussion on this petition or its aims.  Our city leaders continue to not understand the scale of environmental damage and impact that recent rapid development has had on our stressed and failing infrastructure.  PIpes continue to break, and they continue to bury their head in the sand.

But while our city leaders refuse to act, we are now helped by the State of Florida, which has stepped in to help force the change necessary to make our city great again.  With clean water a priority of our Governor, Ron De Santis, leadership from Tallahassee is now taking the mantle abdicated by our mayor and commissioners.

Again, I want to thank all 13,500 of you for your help in signing and sharing this petition.  We continue to fight for change, and, more importantly, will remember this petition of the ballot box with our next mayoral election November 2020.
