Mayor Whitmire has installed a HAWK signal at the Nicholson trail crossing. Yahooo! This was the original safety request the community made and it's finally getting done. Somehow, under the prior administration that request morphed into 2 bike lanes, floating bus stops, medians, pedestrian crossing islands and the removal of 2 vehicular travel lanes. Believe it or not, the anti-car community is livid and on the war path; they fear the HAWK is an indication that the mayor will remove the 11th Street bike lanes.
We have asked city officials if the bike lanes will be removed but they are mum. They tell us no decisions have been made that they can share. We want to encourage the mayor, to tell him THANK YOU for the HAWK! and for giving us hope that 11th Street may be restored in some manner at some point.
Please consider making a campaign donation, or writing a personal note of appreciation that we will then give to Whitmire's campaign Thursday night at his fund raiser. Every donation or note we receive will be safe guarded until handed directly to Mayor Whitmire's campaign. And think about it: A personal note costs you nothing but makes a big statement because he will read it.
Please also help spread the word about what we are doing! This is so important. We all care about our environment and being able to walk or bike safely, but 11th Street was designed poorly, looks and functions really badly and serves few. It needs improvement. Compare it to Durham/Shepherd which is not perfect but functions much better than 11th Street. Make no mistake, this is a fight for your community!
