On behalf of CASSE NSW, a very sincere thank you for your signature in support of a federal government inquiry into the safe transition to a steady state economy. You are one of 682. The financial contributions which helped boost numbers were also very greatly appreciated.
We are hoping you would be so generous as to follow this up by contacting your local Federal Member of Parliament and State Senators. Your response might include some of the ideas listed at the base of this email.
There are reasons to believe that such a petition might be successful.
1. The current government is giving serious consideration to the Circular Economy.
a. It has established the Circular Economy Ministerial Advisory Group which has very recently produced its interim[1] and final report[2].
b. The Productivity Commission is currently holding an inquiry into how the Circular Economy could benefit Australia.[3]
c. Many OECD countries now attempting efforts to make their economies more circular. However, according to the most recent Circularity Gap Report, the still low lever of circularity is decreasing rather than increasing, indicating ongoing failure to achieve the goals of even the Circular Economy.
2. Dr Sophie Scamps MP for Mackellar (a Community Independent on the Northern Beaches of Sydney and a very strong advocate for action on the global warming crisis), has advised us to contact as many federal representatives as possible to show that the endless economic growth is actually a widespread concern. She points out that this will increase that chance that the Productivity Commission would take on a new and more extensive inquiry.
We suggest that you make the following points as you contact your MP and State Senators.
a. There is a growing awareness that unlimited resources extraction and unlimited waste production is not possible on our finite planet.
b. The federal government has recognised that there is a concern for the consumption of natural resources and the production of waste as indicated by the establishment of the Circular Economy Ministerial Advisory Group and the inquiry into the Circular Economy.
c. The raison d'etre of the Circular Economy is more efficient use of resources as a way of facilitating GREATER economic growth, not reducing it. Clearly, the Circular Economy as currently promoted, can only exacerbate the problems it is aiming to respond to. (We suggest you emphasis this).
d. The level of circularity is getting worse not better, (See the Circularity Gap Report, 2025[4])
e. The “Great Acceleration” graphs[5] highlight the unsustainability of exponential growth even if it at levels as low as 2-3%. (We encourage you to include them in your letter or email).
f. Will you as my representative, support the petition[6] organised by the NSW Centre for the Advancement of the Steady State Economy for an inquiry by the Productivity Commission for a safe transition to a steady state economy, including the points made in this petition, as well as the prospect that degrowth might be required in order to achieve such an outcome?
As the signatories of the petition have come from many electorates and states, we rely on you the find them at: https://www.aph.gov.au/Senators_and_Members/Contacting_Senators_and_Members Dr Sophie Scamps would appreciate contact from her electorate.
Please let us know if you are able to help in this way or have any questions @ pfjones@tpg.com.au
Once again, we greatly appreciate the time and effort, and in many cases the finance, that you have put into this project. Thank you.
Yours sincerely,
Phil Jones, Secretary/Treasurer and Matthew Washington Co-Director, NSW CASSE
