Folkestone Running Club started this petition to Folkestone and Hythe district council

To Folkestone and Hythe District Council, Sport England and England Athletics. We respectfully request that you support the building of an Athletics Track in Folkestone at the Three Hills Sports Park.

Folkestone Running Club and Junior athletics have been enjoying a boom over the last few years, particularly since London 2012. We have for many years been based at the Cheriton Road Sports Ground using both the polo ground and surrounding roads (pavements) for training and in the Sports Hall for junior athletics. However due to the increasing size of the club in both seniors and juniors it has become increasingly apparent that training on the pavements, particularly in the winter is becoming increasingly difficult if not dangerous and certainly not suitable for juniors. Also these training facilities are not suitable for training disabled athletes and those interested in taking part in Track and Field Athletics. Use of the Polo ground is also difficult as it is very dependent on the weather conditions or usage by Footballers and Cricketers.

An athletics track would allow the club to train safely in a controlled environment and would extend opportunities not only to able bodied athletes but also those with a disability. It is not just Folkestone Running Club that would benefit from these facilities but other local clubs such as South Kent Harriers and Hawkinge Hurricanes together with any number of local sports clubs such as Hockey, Football, Rugby etc and any other clubs or individuals that would like to use the facilities to improve their fitness. Most importantly it would allow local schools to use these facilities to avoid the trek up to the already overused Julie Rose track at Ashford and save a considerable amount of money for cash strapped schools. Sports facilities are usually thought to be a great asset to any area and an athletics track will provide a great facility for young and old to become involved in sport and to build on the success already achieved by the Three Hills and their aim to help the people in this area improve both their physical and mental health.

We are very proud of our own junior athletic section who regularly compete successfully at County level and have achieved many county honours but it is a continuous struggle to ensure that they are able to train using the appropriate equipment which usually means that they have to make the journey to Ashford if and when the facilities are available. The Three Hills is in an excellent location as it is not only near to many of the local schools but also has excellent public transport links.
