I have been contacted by FIU which is a start. The Director of Housing said that he will be looking into the language of the contract and that it may need to be changed to support those having COVID-19 concerns and had the change from in person to remote classes. The buyout is unfair.

For FIU, I believe due to COVID-19, things that should be added to the list of approved cancellations are:

When a student is fully remote due to COVID-19.

When a student is at home and can continue their education at home due to COVID-19. 

If we needed housing we would do it, and I believe the no housing cancellation fee period should be extended a week or two into the class registration period because people are being surprised by cancelled and edited class assignments. But yet, they can't be released from their housing free of charge, even though its is two months till Spring 2021, that is nonsense. 

I was informed that the appeals will be looked at on a case by case basis, unfortunately, although this is good news, it is not enough for us to pack up and go home with the petition. I need you to not only share and spread this petition, but also confirm if you have gotten out of paying the buyout fee of $2,000 in the comments. Especially when you are remote, or have circumstances that are impossible to overcome that justify staying on campus, so that I know when I should end the petition. Share this and spread it.
