Maybe you attended the so-called "hearing" related to the update of the Myakka River State Park Unit Management Plan. Although the meeting was designed to keep us from being heard, I think over 200 of us made a point that will be heard in Tallahassee: Don't Mess with My Akka.
I am cautiously optimistic that many of the worst provisions will be removed from the plan. So I don't expect to see palm frond or stump harvesting in the next draft.
But pine removal for profit may still be an issue because a representative from the Florida Forest Service spoke in favor of it at the advisory group meeting that followed on Friday. So that's still in contention.
I also noticed they did not rule out hunting, which should be opposed if only because of the toxic effect lead shot has on birds that ingest the pellets.
There is still time to comment. Despite published dates of the 16th, we were told we had until Friday the 17th of March, because an on-screen slide used the 17th. You can send your comments on either the process or the plan contents to FL_StateParkPlanning@dep.state.fl.us
Comments received after the 17th will be considered, but not move forward as part of the official public record.
If you would like to read a version of my personal comments, they may be found on my blog: https://goo.gl/kOTLst
and here is a url for the draft Unit Management Plan.: https://goo.gl/wqX7Oz
I've attached a url for a video produced by Darryl Shaffer. The video includes an interview with me as well as coverage of the "hearing".
The Florida State Parks in Peril Facebook Group is a good source on what is happening to our state parks, including Myakka.
Once again, thanks for your concern about Myakka River State Park. I will write again when DEP releases its revised draft UMP.
