Washington State Ferries has already racked up thousands of cancelled sailings this year. 45% of those were due to crew call-outs - and most of those were vital positions like engineers. Our WSF engineers are understaffed and underpaid. In 2023, 400 engineers put in over 80,000 hours of overtime.

We know competitive wages and compensation packages are key to stronger recruitment and retention. We know that adequate staffing is key to restoring reliability and resiliency in the system. Washington state is currently bargaining with the Marine Engineers Beneficial Association, and they're not offering the competitive compensation needed to help end this ferry crisis.
