According to Global Witness almost 4 environmental defenders are murdered every week. Why? Because those killings too often go unpunished.  

Three years ago four leaders of Saweto, an indigenous community in the Peruvian were tortured and killed just because they asked the government to get illegal loggers off of their land.

Now the government is refusing to prosecute the case. Prosecutors have never bothered to interview most of the suspects, even though there was a witness--not related to the Saweto--who overheard the killers celebrating and laughing as they recounted their crime. 

Today, the people of Saweto live in fear, as they continue to be threatened by the illegal loggers. Failure to prosecute the killers sends a clear message: killing indigenous people is not crime and killing people who protect our rainforests is not a crime. It puts all environmental defenders at risk.
