This will be our update for the day. This well-written explanation of why they oppose religious-based public school release time, was sent in by a petition supporter.
They write:
I have things to say. I always have things to say. This time I was hesitant, because I am Christian. I have a strong Christian background. I am not opposed to groups of students forming a prayer group before or after school, outside of school. I’m not opposed to a student bowing their head in silent prayer before an important test. I’m not opposed to a group of students openly discussing their religion at recess. What am I opposed to? Offering religious instruction during school hours that focuses on one religion only. Our public school students come from many different religious backgrounds. Public school is supposed to offer a complete and fair education to every student that passes through. A Christian program in our public schools throws that fairness way off balance. Religious instruction should only be found in private, parochial school, shouldn’t it? I’m also concerned with taking students outside of the classroom to attend religious instruction. It is my understanding that they will be taken from Art, Music or Gym class if they opt in to the program. Who was it that decided these were the least important classes and that religious instruction is more important? How incredibly disrespectful to the “specials” teachers who have a passion for helping young children find their singing voice, learn rhythm, find their artistic creativity and practice their large motor skills. Our tax money goes toward public education to ensure a well rounded education. Replacing any of these classes with organized religious education seems like a total disregard of The separation of church and state. But I’ve read that it is legal because it’s held outside of the school building, transportation will not be provided by the school system and because it’s privately funded. If this isn’t as close to, “it doesn’t matter what you do as long as you don’t get caught” I don’t know what is. Please sign and share the petition if you have the same concerns as I do. I think the school board needs to hear from us.
