Promote literacy and the local economy in Newfoundland by keeping taxes on books low

The Issue

Newfoundland book publishers are concerned that changing the tax on printed books from 5% to 15% would be detrimental not only to our bookstores and publishers but to the larger issue of literacy in our province. If books become more expensive, reading levels would be negatively impacted and employment opportunities weakened.

Whereas most jurisdictions in the world have a favourable policy concerning the taxation of printed material, Newfoundland and Labrador would set an unfortunate Canadian precedent in fully taxing books if the tax on books were to rise to 15%. No other province does so. We need to convince our government of the importance of maintaining the current taxation structure.

We need to keep books as affordable as possible to encourage reading and to promote literacy in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Please sign our petition and spread the word. Write or call your MHA or contact the media to further voice your opinion. Let them know we do not want this tax and we cannot afford to have this tax implemented.
