Petition to end violence against Uber and Taxify drivers.

Uber and Taxify drivers in South Africa are at risk daily and live in fear of their lives. Easy targets because they are driving alone and are easily recognizable.

Meter Taxi violence and intimidation has escalated at an alarming rate, attacks becoming more frequent and brutal. A petrol bomb was thrown into an Uber car recently, the driver was in ICU, unable to talk, his car a burnt out shell. Another was beaten and his face slashed with a knife, he managed to get away while they were trying to force him into the boot but now needs surgery to insert a metal plate in his face.  Probably 99% of attacks happen when a driver is alone so there are no witnesses. Business has dropped off which isn't fair as this is their aim. They don't want riders to be able to identify them or take action against them so PLEASE DON'T LET THEM ACHIEVE THEIR AIM, DON'T LET THEM SUCCEED IN SCARING YOU AWAY.

With the introduction of cash trips where NO identification is required, (only a Rica'd SIM card and email address are needed to activate your account) drivers are being Hijacked and robbed at gunpoint weekly, sometimes daily. They pick up clients who pull guns on the drivers, taking their phones and money and sometimes the car and there is no way to trace them. We need proper identification from riders and an option of whether to take cash trips. Police could launch under cover operations and be arresting these gangs.

Cases are sometimes turned away by police, sometimes incidents happen WITHIN POLICE VIEW. Few arrests are being made and even fewer convictions. We need police presence at hot spots and a zero tolerance to intimidation. possibly cases could be referred to a central investigation team.

Uber and Taxify drivers live in fear, each day leaving home not knowing it will be there last. The majority do not have medical aid or life/disability cover or income protection. They do not get any compensation or assistance when hospitized or when they cannot work to provide food on the table.

Please help bring this to every Uber and Taxify riders attention.  The next attack could be your driver. Please tell drivers to sign the petition too.
