Every year, thousands of kittens and puppies are born and are "dumped" or euthanized because they are either deemed unwanted or there simply is no room for them in shelters. I believe everything animal is worthy of a happy healthy life but there just aren't enough homes to place them in. Fosters, shelters, and the tireless efforts of rescuers can only do so much, especially as we enter kitten season. Ive seen and helped too many of these poor animals and know there has to be a way to curve the statistics. The federal government has come a long way in making it a federal offense to abuse or neglect an animal. So why then is it not abuse or neglect to not spay or neuter your animal? It's been medical proven they live longer healthier lives. Females tend to develop cancers of the reproductive organs and can even be affected mentally from their heat cycles. The gestation period of a cat is about 3 months. That could produce up to a few dozen kittens each that would more than likely end up on the streets, producing kittens of their own within the year. This has become a heartbreaking problem for all that put their efforts in getting these animals off the streets. The federal government should step in and make it mandatory for all owners to spay and neuter your pets with fines issued upon noncompliance.
