Response from MP

Sent the link to my member of Parliament, this is the response I received "Thanks for your email. This idea has been discussed in the past. With the cost of housing being so high particularly in the capital cities, I’m not surprised that some people are again looking to superannuation as a possible source for a deposit. While I think there are some common sense arguments in favour of this idea, it goes against the fundamental concept behind superannuation, which is to provide for people’s retirement and reduce reliance on the aged pension. I think we need to look at other policies affecting house prices before we consider fundamentally altering the superannuation system. The comments on your petition show there are many people concerned about housing affordability and first home buyers, so thank you for taking the time to share your idea with me." Personally I don't understand the logic, because investing in super doesn't always guarantee positive returns, where as property investment usually increases in value; equity in their home could then be used to fund their retirement!
