Remove Hate Speech from Presidential Debates

The Issue

The Republican Presidential candidates debate on August 6, 2015 aired rampant hate speech, disparaging comments and unchecked attacks on persons of Central American lineage and women.

While the US is generally lenient in regulating speech rights, presidential election debates are specifically geared toward providing access to information to the public about the most fundamental of citizen responsibilities: voting, and deserve special protection.

The FEC should regulate, and make public its regulations, for such debates so that protected classes of society are not demeaned in a forum designed to reach the entire populus of the country, for the purpose of serious dissimination of information on future leaders of the country. Allowing this kind of hateful speech in this forum precludes fair participation in the political process.
