A couple of years ago I was tasked with moving a company from one Customer Relationship Management (CRM) tool to another. CRMs contain much of the same kind of information that social media platforms contain (first name, last name, email, etc...) but also contain a lot more information like product information, billing schedules, support case data, etc...
CRM tools, like social media platforms, are completely proprietary. Their code is written from scratch and the code that runs one is usually completely different than the code that runs another. They typically don't look anything like each other - much like Facebook and Twitter look completely different.
The exercise of deciding where data from one CRM tool should reside in another took several months. However, once those decisions were made and the code written to make the transfer it actually took less than a day for the transfer to take place. We lost no data in the process, it was just organized differently in the new CRM than it was in the old.
Most importantly, now that the code is written, I can run it and transfer the data between these two CRMs at will anytime. If you are curious about the process, please read the attached article.
