“1 in 133 Americans has celiacs disease”(“Celiac Disease: Fast Facts” 1). Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease in which consuming gluten causes the body to attack itself, damaging the small intestine. “18 million Americans have non-celiac gluten sensitivity” (Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity 1). Non-celiac gluten sensitivity is a disease in which gluten causes severe symptoms, however these people lack small intestine damage. Both of these conditions are serious and causes severe symptoms when ingesting gluten. Currently, companies may put gluten in products under different names, making it hard for people with celiac disease or non-celiac gluten sensitivity to know what they can eat. Companies should be required, by law, to state gluten in the allergy disclaimer.
