Extend CIPA filing deadline to January 2027
The Issue
I am a dedicated company secretary in Botswana, committed to supporting and guiding businesses in maintaining compliance. However, I've witnessed firsthand the devastating impact that recent changes by the Companies And Intellectual Property Authority (CIPA) have had on numerous companies. Many businesses have been unfairly removed from the registrar simply because they could not file their company constitutions on time; this happened even after an extension was given.
The economic landscape in Botswana has been challenging for many, with countless companies relying on tendering for sustenance. Unfortunately, the government has halted issuing tenders and predominantly uses the direct appointment method, leaving many companies disadvantaged and scrambling for survival. Adding to the strain, government payments have been delayed, resulting in businesses grappling with cash flow issues. Personally, I have an invoice that has been outstanding since July, and I know numerous others who are in similar situations.
Given these significant challenges, I propose that CIPA extends the filing deadline to 31 January 2027. December and January are traditionally periods when companies are not expected to make such filings, providing a natural pause for businesses to recalibrate and prepare their documents properly without the additional financial strain.
Extending the deadline would provide a much-needed lifeline for many businesses on the verge of closure, enabling them to retain their standing and continue contributing to Botswana’s economy. This extension would offer companies the time to adjust to the new compliance requirements, especially during this economic downturn, without the additional stress of imminent deregistration.
We urge CIPA and the government to consider the broader economic implications of stringent compliance enforcements during such turbulent times. By extending the deadline, we can support our local businesses and foster a more stable and thriving economic environment.
Please join me in calling on CIPA to extend this crucial deadline. Sign this petition to show your support for Botswana’s businesses and to ensure that they remain an integral part of our economic future.
