Guild launches independent investigation
Oct 22, 2021 —
We thought it necessary to update you on the latest action taken by the Guild in response to the wider campaign against the Exeter Students for Life society. Yesterday evening, we received notification from the complaints department of the Guild that an independent investigation was being launched, in line with the Guild's Code of Conduct. An email from them reads:
"Dear George, Isobel and Lauren,
Thank you for your email and for taking the time to write out your thoughts and share these with us. We are also aware of the petition.
I'm writing to let you know that, as a result of several complaints relating to the online conduct of some members of the Exeter Students for Life society, we will now be launching an independent investigation, in line with our Code of Conduct. The investigation may also make recommendations for how we can better balance our duty to secure freedom of speech with our duty of care to our members.
The Guild has commissioned an external consultant to undertake the investigation. As part of this, they may wish to speak to you to understand your specific complaint and experience in more detail. If this is the case, the consultant will be in touch with you directly over the next few days.
If you have any further information or evidence that you feel may help the investigation, please send this to us as soon as you can, so that we can ensure it is considered.
We will be in touch with you to let you know the outcome of the investigation once it has been completed. We expect that this will be within 2-3 weeks, however we will keep you updated if this is not possible.
Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.
We would like to thank the Guild for their response and for launching an independent investigation. In support of it, we have sent pertinent evidence concerning the comments made - such as the comment about abortion deserving punishment, and if asked we will provide any other evidence required.
George, Isobel and Lauren
