In our world today, The use of plastic and paper bags are widespread. From supermarkets, shops and  up to fast  food chain take- outs, it is used for packaging. These has been a big part of our lives. Little do we know ,That doing this slowly destroys our planet. Many of us don't give them a second thought because we've been using it for a long time- but we should. Plastic bags, are one of the main reasons why global warming and climate change happens. Plastic bags are created using fossil fuels and also require vast amounts of water and energy in order to have them manufactured and shipped. The production of plastic bags requires the use of billions of pounds of fossil fuels as well as billions of gallons of fresh water. The manufacturing process results in billions of pounds of solid waste and millions of tons of Carbon Dioxide (Co2)  every year that contributes to our carbon footprint. Plastic bags can have various negative impacts on the environment. In addition to the use of natural resources and waste from plastic bag production, plastic bags can increase the risk of flooding. Because they never break down completely, plastic bags can clog storm drains and other areas which can eventually cause severe flooding. Plastic products are also causing serious issues in the world's oceans, where pieces of plastic actually outnumber the amount of plankton in the water. The plastic pieces can lead to birds and marine life choking, consuming partially broken down pieces of plastic, and being strangled by discarded shopping bags and other items. Plastic pollution in oceans has been shown to have a negative impact on hundreds of different species of marine life.  On the other hand, People believe that paper bags are better than plastic bags, but nevertheless both of them have a negative impact in our environment. Even though, paper is a biodegradable material, our forests are being “bald” because trees are being cut down and  used in making it and other paper  products , resulting in deforestation . Also if there’s a heavy rain there would be no trees that would help in lessening flood and it’s negative effects.

As a possible solution in this impediment, were starting a petition of  implementing the use of eco- bags instead of  plastic and paper bags in shops,  business establishments and markets.  There are  REASONS on why we should use eco -bags:

First, Eco -bags are also helpful because they can be used for several times, an average green bag can be used for up to 371 times before disposed. They are large eco -friendly green bags which can hold more items and are more beneficial for shopping. Plastic bags are usually very cheap and low quality, due to which they are broken easily. But reusable bags offer ability to save environment and time as well as much of the monetary benefits

o  Second, It is often made from eco - friendly materials such as canvas, natural fibres such as Jute, woven synthetic fibers, that is more durable than disposable plastic bags. People who have used reusable green bags will prefer to use them again due to their affordability and durability features .

o  Third, A plastic bag can take from 15 to 1,000 years to break down, depending on environment. In a landfill, kept away from the environment that would help them biodegrade more easily, paper bags don’t do much better. So switch to eco- bags.

o  Fourth, An estimated one million birds, 100,000 turtles, and countless other sea animals die each year from ingesting plastic. The animals confuse floating bags and plastic particles for edible sea life such as jellyfish and plankton. Once ingested, the plastic blocks the digestive tract and the animals starve to death. Other animals drown after becoming entangled in plastic waste.

o  Fifth,Despite being highly recyclable, only 20% of paper bags end up being recycled, while the rest share a fate with their plastic brethren.

o   Lastly, According to the Environmental Protection Agency, which has been collecting plastic bag statistics for more than a decade, roughly 2% of plastic bags are recycled in the United States. The rest are left to live on indefinitely in landfills or decompose in our oceans, where they leech toxins into the water and soil.

As a famous environmentalist says , “Sooner or later, we will have to recognize that the Earth has rights, too, to live without pollution. What mankind must know is that human beings cannot live without Mother Earth, but the planet can live without humans.”
