Every Person Deserves a Nationality: End Statelessness Worldwide
Every Person Deserves a Nationality: End Statelessness Worldwide
The Issue
Millions of people live without a nationality, no country recognizing them as citizens. I am a student passionate about international relations and human rights, and the issue of statelessness. It remains one of the most overlooked human rights crises of our time, despite affecting millions who are denied basic rights such as education, healthcare, and legal employment because they lack citizenship. Without nationality, these individuals are often trapped in a cycle of poverty and vulnerability.
The deprivation stateless people face is driven by a complex web of factors. Discriminatory citizenship laws, issues arising from state succession, and legislation that prevents women from passing their nationality to their children are some of the primary causes. As a result, stateless individuals are left without legal documentation, making it nearly impossible for them to secure a decent livelihood, education, or access to healthcare.
The UNHCR's #IBelong Campaign aims to end statelessness by generating global awareness, advocating for reforms in nationality laws, and ensuring that everyone has the right to a nationality. By supporting this campaign, we can push for legislative changes that allow individuals to claim citizenship, regardless of their circumstances.
We urge governments to reform laws that perpetuate statelessness, to employ more inclusive citizenship laws that do not discriminate based on gender or ethnicity, and to honor international agreements related to the reduction of statelessness. According to UNHCR, there are 4.5 million stateless people worldwide, but this is likely an underestimate. Every child deserves a nationality. Every person deserves to belong.
Join me in raising your voice to urge global leaders and decision-makers to support the UNHCR's commitment to end statelessness. Let's push for policies that recognise the inherent dignity and equality of every individual. Please, sign this petition to support UNHCR's #IBelong Campaign to end statelessness and give millions of stateless people the chance to secure their rights and live their life with dignity. Together, we can ensure that no one is left without a voice or a home in our world.
