Update zu Covid19 (Corona) and the Situation in Refugee Camps in Greece
Dear Signees of the petition #EuropeansForHumanity
We are deeply thankful for all your support.
As of today (Sun, March 15th), we have almost reached 1.000 signatures in only one week. We have received numerous comments on change.org from you and we are glad that you all stand with this important cause.
In the light of the Corona/Covid-19-situtation in Europe, the media focus on the situation for refugees on the Aegean islands has been lost almost entirely. But while on EU mainland we fight over toilet paper in stores and horde hand sanitizers, both these things are not available in the overcrowded camps. In fact, even running water to wash your hands is unavailable for most of the inhabitants.
The situation for refugees could not be worse at this time. The government decreed that all humanitarian organizations on Lesvos and other Aegean islands have to cease operations until at least March 26.
- NO basic hygienic supply and equipment like running water, soap, showers, toilet paper, sanitary facilities, clean environment to change diapers, etc.
- This means NO supply of food, clean water, basic medical services and supplies.
- NO Corona-tests.
- NO face masks.
- NO treatment of sick people.
It is because of this situation, we turn to you, our initial backers. PLEASE help us to build pressure on European governments to get a hold of this situation immediately.
We have extended our demands due to the recent developments
- Immediate evacuation of Camp Moria on Lesvos and all overcrowded camps on the Aegean Islands
- Decentralize Refugee accommodation to avoid a humanitarian and medical catastrophe
- Reinstate Humanitarian Aid work immediately OR substitute with government structures
- Stop and prevent all violence against humanitarian aid workers and refugees by government forces and right-wing extremist groups. EFH calls the European Commission to terminate firearm action and the usage of tear gas on the EU-Turkish borders immediately.
Stop criminalization of humanitarian aid work - And finally, we demand the European Union and Nobel Peace Prize laureate as well as the Greek government to stand up for its values and immediately reinstate the asylum law.
#EuropeansForHumanity is only a small group of people. Most of us have been to Lesvos, some have worked in other fields of humanitarian aid work. But we are only so many, and we call for your support.

These may seem like small steps. But in these times, protesting online and raising awareness for those of us, who have no place to go and no place to hide or to isolate themselves, is the most important thing we can do.
This is what European solidarity means. Helping your elderly neighbors to buy groceries, not having the family celebration you were looking forward to, accepting restrictions to your democratic rights.
But it also means to stand up for those who have no voice, no power, no protection, no help. We can be there for each other. You can stand with us and stop this madness on the Aegean islands.
We won’t be silent in the coming weeks. Be loud with us. We all are Europeans for Humanity.
