It has been commented that this petition cannot succeed because "blocking" an Article 50 it is not in the EU's remit and would require some kind of retrospective Treaty change. We contend that this is not the case, as Article 50 arguably requires the UK (i.e. if challenged by the other member states) to *demonstrate* that it has acted constitutionally. The UK's constitution is vague and unwritten and is based to a large extent on precedent, and the current situation has no clear precedent. This is why the EU is presently calling for clarification of the UK position. And this is why we must urge them to require that clarification to be satisfactory. Doing so is naturally in the interests of the member states of the EU. It is doubly in the interests of the UK, as an insistence by the EU would absolve the UK government of some responsibility for upsetting a large portion of its electorate (bit late for that).
