You know about Etsy’s merch which eroticises and normalises incest and child sexual abuse - including replica child-size body parts for men’s sexual use. Some of these - and a range of other p*rn-themed products - carry the descriptor ‘Asian girl’ - blatantly objectifying Asian women and girls and fuelling racialised hatred against them.
That didn’t stop Etsy’s CEO Josh Silverman from condemning racism in the wake of the mass murder of six Asian women in Atlanta last week. ‘We have zero tolerance for hate’ and racism has 'no place in our company’, he said. All while promoting racism, and profiting.
In a separate display of double standards, on International Women’s Day last month, Silverman boasted about how Etsy gives women an ‘on-ramp’ to business, urging that ‘there’s no better time to celebrate and uplift women’. Meanwhile, Collective Shout has continued to document how Etsy degrades women and eroticises their abuse.
Selling products which fetishise abuse and violence against Asian women and girls - all women and girls - is no way for a corporate to show it cares about women, or stopping racism.
Etsy is a corporate hypocrite - and everyone needs to know!
Thanks to all who have signed the petition since the last update - keep signing and sharing! Let’s continue to hold Etsy to account for its double standards and urge its corporate heads to demonstrate corporate social responsibility and stop selling merch which trivialises the abuse of women and girls.
Thank you as always,
Anna
