Save the Tropicair: Stop Demolition of 880 71st Street

The Issue

The Tropicair, a once beautiful hotel which has been run down for many years due to improper and irresponsible maintenance, is now being demolished at the corner of 71st Street and Bay Drive.

The owners, who have received offers to purchase the property, are instead proceeding with demolition of the property due to an Unsafe Structures Board order several years ago after numerous safety violations.

Potential buyers are willing to step in and purchase the property, so that this once blighted spot can again become a contributing part of the community.

Instead, the owners are snubbing the community and demolishing the property - perhaps to be able to squeeze out more property value.

We ask the owners to STOP demolition of the building and to allow a solution to materialize so that community revitalization will begin.

If the owners proceed with demolition, we ask the Historic Preservation Board and Design Review Boards to require that the property be limited in size / FAR and height to what was already there, due to the improper and irresponsible maintenance of this structure over many years. The property owners should not receive a windfall for their failure to take care of this important part of Miami Beach history.
