Hello, my name is Robert.

I've dreamt about being part of the military all my life. Unfortunately, due to medical issues, my dream was ripped away before I could realize it. But it's not just about my aspirations, it's about something larger than us — an initiative for a safer and more secure Iowa. 

Today, I propose the establishment of the Iowa State Defense Force. I am not alone in this. There are many like me who, for one reason or another, could not join the federal military but still have that burning desire to serve and defend our great state.

The State Defense Force is similar to the National Guard and is considered a part of the military. It is localized to the state of Iowa and assists in helping others in times of need such as tornado, floods and so on. This program is completely voluntary and anyone who would join would be required to provide all of the uniforms and other items themselves.

The idea isn't new or alien. 23 states across the U.S already have active State Defense Forces. These forces serve as a vital supporting role to the National Guard in times of natural disaster or civil emergencies. Their contribution during Hurricane Katrina, as reported by the Center for Disaster and Humanitarian Assistance Medicine, was invaluable in rescuing and providing aid to citizens.

Our petition is not about creating an aggressive force, but about organizing willing and passionate citizens to help complement our existing defense and disaster management capabilities. This is a call for readiness, resilience, and duty to the people of Iowa.
