This is the very question I have had for years when I hear other stories of domestic abuse; the tawdry beginnings to the macabre endings turned my stomach! But the real reason I got into the business of Gender and Human Rights, before 9/11, was because of the stories. So many of them silked the same web of betrayal, hurt and shame yet ending up in the same situations and possible deaths, when the main question was, why did the abuser think they could get away with it?!? Why would they think they would not be caught, accused and convicted?!? Like so many with a new criminal record, WHEN they get a “slap on the wrist” punishment, and to escape their shame, the abuser moves to another town or to a whole other state, thinking the change of scenery would change their thinking and how they handle relationships. The tragedy in that thinking is that wherever the abuser goes, the mindset follows! So it’s not the new house they live in or the awesome new job they get, it what they do when the next victim crosses their path; what happens when your child meets them?!? #KiyahsLaw: The Domestic Violence Offender Registry Act (DVORA) was designed to keep meticulous records of where convicted Violent Domesticators go, where they live and their crimes, available to the public. Just like a Sexual Offender Registry would. Only this time each state would have access to this data. So you can cross state lines and beat on someone else’s adult child, but if the police comes, there won’t a question of who’s going to jail that night! If their name is on the registry, they will be the one leaving hopefully for good…
