It’s been 38 days. It’s been one month, one week and one day today, that Zakiyah took her last breath. This day doesn’t seem like it’s a milestone or a day that is to be remembered in some sequential way, but it’s been 38 days that this mother has lost her youngest child. It’s been 38 days that I have had this pain in my soul. It’s been 38 days that her sisters lost a sister and it’s been 38 days that yet another mother has to feel the pain of losing a child, to a senseless act of domestic violence. This is why I employ you to help support the Domestic Violence Offender Registry Act (DVORA). This registry would not only prevent people from becoming victims, but would allow people to make better choices in who they let in their life. This public registry would be designed to keep the victims names and personal information private but allows the public at large to know if the person they are searching is a violent domesticator. It will stop offenders from committing crimes in one state, packing a bag and going to another state to repeat the crime. In short, it would save lives. So, can I ask that you share this campaign with those around you or in your community, your house of Worship or those that you work with or go to school with?!? May I ask you to talk to your local public officials about starting a similar campaign in your area?!? Can I ask you, to do background checks, on those that you’re welcoming into your family or those that you are wanting to get to know on a personal level, just for your protection?!? Having a domestic violence, offender registry would not only be beneficial for survivors, but it’s a tool of prevention…and care.
