The Issue

Though it might come as a surprise, the United States federal law does not declare an official language. However, English has been the de facto national language since the country was established. This petition seeks to make English the official language at a federal level.

As per the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly 79% of U.S. residents speak only English at home, and another 17% speak both English and another language (US Census Bureau, 2019). Acknowledging English as the official language would recognize its predominant usage and its integral role in all aspects of American life, from trade to education.

Potential benefits include greater unity among citizens and improved clarity in government communications. However, it's important to note that this proposal is not aimed at discouraging bilingualism or multilingualism, both of which provide individual and societal benefits. Rather, it is about acknowledging the unifying role English plays in our diverse nation.

Please join in supporting the establishment of English as the de jure official language of the United States by signing and sharing this petition.
