My sister and I have a passion for BMX racing that runs deep, but unfortunately, our hometown of Lockport lacks the necessary resources for us to train or ride our bikes. Our closest option for a BMX track is a daunting 45+ minute drive away, and a suitable pump track lies even further, all the way in Chicago, more than 50 minutes away traveling under ideal conditions. We know we are not alone in our struggle. This issue, affecting us and numerous other active BMX enthusiasts in our community, leads us to petition for the establishment of a pump track or a sanctioned USA BMX race track in Lockport.

In the United States, more than 100,000 people participate in BMX racing (USA BMX, 2018). Not only is BMX racing a thrilling sport, but it also promotes physical health, camaraderie, and sportsmanship. By providing local access to the necessary facilities, we can foster these positive traits right here at home.

The distance we have to travel to access a track certainly goes beyond inconvenience. It affects our ability to train regularly, our performance in races due to inconsistent training, and of course, contributes to additional expenses and environmental impact. Other kids and adults who are interested in the sport are also dissuaded by these significant barriers.
