Growing up in a politically diverse family, I learnt the value of unbiased communication and the importance of making decisions based on merit rather than party lines. This principle has always guided me, and now, as a part of the vibrant academic community at Jadavpur University, it is all the more vital that our student voice remains undivided by political affiliations.

Jadavpur University, renowned for its academic excellence and progressive student body, deserves a student union that empowers all students equally, without undue influence from external political entities. Presently, many of us feel that student representation gets sidetracked by larger political agendas, and this often hinders our ability to address issues pertinent to our immediate educational environment.

A politically independent student union allows for a focus on student welfare, facility improvements, and constructive discourse on academic reforms, free from bias and political pressures. Many institutions worldwide have successfully implemented neutral bodies, leading to tangible improvements in student life and academic policies. For example, institutions like the University of California have student governments that explicitly maintain political neutrality, which enables them to focus solely on their primary role: serving and benefitting their peers.

Currently, decisions seem to be made with a view towards satisfying political benefactors rather than optimizing student experience. Imagine if every decision about our campus, our facilities, and our academic policies were made with only one consideration in mind: what is best for the students?

The goal of this petition is to push for the establishment of a new framework for the student union at Jadavpur University, one that is completely free from political ties. This would involve creating a transparent election process where candidates focus more on their vision for the university than on their political alignment.

We call upon the university administration, faculty, and current student leaders to champion this initiative, creating forums for open dialogue, reviewing the constitution of the student union, and setting up an independent oversight committee to ensure political neutrality can and will be achieved.
