Establish a Conviction Integrity Unit in Elkhart County
Establish a Conviction Integrity Unit in Elkhart County
The Issue
Join us in standing for justice.
This petition aims to establish a Conviction Integrity Unit (CIU) within Elkhart County, Indiana. This move is inspired by the increasing need to uphold justice, ensuring that wrongful convictions are averted and that justice serves not just a directive function but an enlightened and evolved one.
Justification
Ever since 1989, the National Registry of Exonerations reports that 3,593 individuals have been wrongfully convicted and subsequently exonerated in the United States. This accounts for a profound lapse in the justice system, leading to over 32,750 years unjustly taken from people's lives. Our objective is to safeguard these lives and recalibrate the integrity of our justice system by scrutinizing cases for the possibility of misconduct or errors, hence ensuring justice is not just an ideal but a reliable reality we can all abide by.
Elkhart County is recently known for its wrongful conviction rate. There have been six exonerations in this county. Some of which are - Andrew Royer who spent 16 years in prison after falsely confessing to murder. Royer, now 44, was released in 2020. Dewayne Dunn spent 13 years in prison for a murder he didn’t commit. Keith Cooper (54) spent 8 years in prison for an armed robbery conviction in 1997 and was pardoned in 2017, and released in April 2006. His co-defendant, Christopher Parish, was also exonerated.
