Today marks 1000 days of closure of Boxted bridge since June 30th 2023.
The September 2025 Accolade load test results finally confirm that the lengthy closure to pedestrians, cyclists and canoeists on safety grounds was unnecessary and without justification. A fenced pedestrian passageway across the centre of the bridge has now been opened and the pontoon blockade removed from under the bridge.
The closure continues to massively inconvenience drivers on both sides of the river in Essex and Suffolk who endure a lengthy diversion adding stress, time and cost to their journeys.
We are still waiting for the results of the Public Consultation on the Traffic Regulation Order ‘Proposed Prohibition of Motorised vehicles’ on the bridge. Will the responses finally convince Essex Highways that it is in everyone’s interests to repair and reopen the bridge to vehicles?
