Whilst cycling over Cat and Mutton bridge, Broadway Market, Hackney, in London I was struck by the sight of two people straining to look over the parapet at the view down onto Regent's Canal. I happened to have a measuring tape with me; the bridge parapet height was 147 cms, just short of the 150 cm central parapet height proposed in Essex Highways' planning application design for a replacement superstructure Boxted bridge. Here then is a convenient visual to imagine their proposed visitor experience!
It is no coincidence that in 1897 bridge builder George Double designed the parapet of Boxted Bridge 130 cm high, the perfect height to safely lean on and enjoy maximum views of the river in it's idyllic rural setting whilst creating a gently pleasing arched span on the sides.
