This week, Richard Horton, Andrew Miller, who runs many Elsevier Journals, and several others promoted the opinion of Dr. Richard Smith, former BMJ Editor, who reviewed the Open Letter saga and found little to criticize. Here is his blog on the issue http://blogs.bmj.com/bmj/2014/11/03/richard-smith-no-case-for-retracting-lancets-gaza-letter/
As always, interpretation of the truth often differs, depending on the interpreter. Enclosed is another summary of the same events http://www.cija.ca/hamas/truth-and-trust/
What can you do? Make your opinion known to your Elsevier Journals, and your colleagues in industry (they buy reprints and advertising). Ask your favorite Journal and Society to support and publish the restatement of principle issued early this week by ADA, AACE, Endocrine Society, and EASD http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/adaaaceeasdtes-statement-in-response-to-a-recently-published-letter-to-the-editor-in-the-lancet-and-an-editorial-addressing-the-israeli-palestinian-fighting-in-gaza-281311631.html
Contact folks at Elsevier and write them politely asking them what they intend to do to regain the respect of the academic community. Your actions make a difference!
