Leggings for APS- updating the 10 year old dress code!

Leggings are comfortable, affordable and popular.  The current APS dress code does not allow leggings because they are "a distraction."  Help me change this policy!

So far, I have done research (not one study proves that leggings are an academic distraction), created a presentation, presented to the Dress Code Policy committee, and attended the first reading of proposed changes.  APS is making great progress updating the 10 year old policy, but I need your support. I learned there are only 2 clusters in APS who do not wear uniforms - Grady and North Atlanta.

PLEASE SIGN this petition to encourage APS to remove the words "distraction/ distracting" from the student dress code policy and and to add a clause to not shame students.  Girls should not be pulled out of class or embarrassed for wearing leggings, which is happening now.  Boys and girls should be able to manage their "distractions" and reactions.  I am not a distraction and me wearing leggings is not a distraction.  The world is full of distractions, but how you react to situations is YOUR problem.

The feedback phase closes on November 13, so let your voice be heard.  The public meeting is in December and the policy change will be for next year!

Thank you,

Falyn Handley - 5th grade, Springdale Park Elementary
