Governor Eric Holcomb Defers Clemency Decision for Kofi M. Ajabu
Today, Governor Eric Holcomb deferred the decision to grant clemency to Kofi Ajabu, a man who has spent decades incarcerated and whose case has sparked significant public and legal debate. While this decision is a setback for Kofi and his supporters, it is not the end of the journey toward justice and freedom.
Kofi, his family, and Orvan Mabie Jr., the Foreman of the Jury that convicted him and a key advocate for clemency, responded to the Governor's decision with a sentiment of dayenu—a Hebrew word expressing gratitude for progress made, even in the face of unfulfilled hopes.
"Although we are disappointed with the decision, we are grateful for what the Governor and the parole board have done and for their commitment to continuing the inquiry into clemency for Kofi," said his family. "This process has shed light on other legal avenues we were previously unaware of, offering renewed hope for Kofi's eventual release."
The movement to bring Kofi home is far from over. This decision has only deepened the resolve of Kofi’s family, legal team, and the more than 7,200 supporters who have rallied around his cause.
"We are disappointed, but not defeated," Kofi’s family emphasized. "To everyone who has joined us in this fight to #BringKofiHome, your support has been invaluable, and we will need it now more than ever as we explore these new paths forward. #StayTuned."
