For months, military retirees, families, advocates, and elected officials have been asking Washington to take the TRICARE situation in Puerto Rico seriously. Now there is a meaningful development. On August 18, TRICARE Director Daniel Gall said he will request a legal and cost evaluation of the proposal to expand TRICARE Prime access in Puerto Rico. (El Nuevo Día) That does not mean TRICARE Prime has been approved for Puerto Rico. It does not mean the fight is over. But it does mean the conversation is moving beyond simply asking whether something should change. The Pentagon is now being asked to examine the legal feasibility and cost of making that change possible. That matters. TRICARE Prime currently operates through designated Prime Service Areas and provides eligible beneficiaries with coordinated care through primary care managers and network providers. Military retirees and their families are among the beneficiary groups who may participate where Prime is available. (TRICARE) For Puerto Rico’s military community, this review represents an opportunity that should not be taken for granted. This is exactly when we need MORE voices, not fewer.
